Those looking for a different and special destination should consider a little
hamlet tucked in the crook of the converging Liard
and Petitot
Rivers, in the Dehcho Region of the Northwest
Territories. Steeped in history and tradition, Fort Liard was first settled
by Dehcho First Nations approximately 10,000 years ago, and their descendants
still form the majority of the hamlet's small population today. Although the modern
world and an economy fueled by oil and gas have found a way to Fort Liard, many
local people continue a traditional way of life on the land and through the arts.
The Acho
Dene Native Crafts store is a must-see for local handcrafts, especially birchwood
baskets adorned with traditional Dene quillwork—a craft particular to the
area. Visitors to Fort Liard will enjoy the long summer days, friendly locals
and unspoiled wilderness. Wood bison commonly roam through this tiny village,
which otherwise features riverfront log cabins and a scattering of shops and amenities.
Offering a true northern wilderness experience, Fort Liard is a great base from
which to access the surrounding lakes, rivers and forests, and flight-seeing tours
into nearby Nahanni
National Park.
