The gateway to Wood Buffalo National Park in Canada's Northwest Territories, Fort Smith is a little hub in the midst of wilderness, nestled alongside the beautiful but intimidating Slave River and surrounded by untouched boreal forest. Located in the South Slave Region of the province, near Alberta's northern border, Fort Smith is an isolated wee town but offers all the modern amenities and conveniences of a popular and worthwhile tourist destination. Here, the mighty Slave River features some of the world's biggest rapids and attracts many daring kayakers and whitewater rafters determined to take up the challenge. But visitors don't need to get in the water to appreciate its power. A stroll along the riverfront boardwalk leads to a lookout over the spectacular and fearsome Rapids of the Drowned—a sight that should not be missed—and kilometres of hiking trails through the forest and along the river offer vistas of the stunning landscape and the chance to spot wildlife. Local culture and the traditional way of northern life can be discovered at both the Northern Life Museum and Fort Smith Mission Historic Park, while the annual summer South Slave Friendship Festival showcases regional music, art and festivities.
