Fort Simpson Territorial Park

The Fort Simpson Territorial Park is situated at the convergence of the Liard and Mackenzie rivers, next to the Papal Site and just a stroll from town. The camping area features informative displays and the beginning of a trail that leads around the perimeter of the town. The park is surrounded by the Syne--a wetland ecosystem that attracts various migratory birds.

Powder Point Day Use Area

Located approximately 45 km east of Yellowknife along Highway 3, on Prelude Lake, the Powder Point Day Use Area features an interpretive display about the area and is great for fishing and canoeing. It is a convenient access point (by canoe) for Hidden Lake Territorial Park.

Hidden Lake Territorial Park

Hidden Lake Territorial Park features the spectacular Hidden Lake and can be reached by boat from Powder Point (45 km from Yellowknife on Highway 3) or on foot via the Cameron Falls Trail (48 km from Yellowknife). As a wilderness park, the reserve has no developed facilities, although no-trace camping is permitted. The lake is great for canoeing, swimming and fishing, and visitors also enjoy hiking and wildlife viewing in the 3,000-ha park.

Lady Evelyn Falls Territorial Park

This park on the Kakisa River is home to the awesome Lady Evelyn Falls. Popular for fishing, the park also attracts visitors for camping. It is located 56 km south of Fort Providence.

Situated approximately 30 km from Yellowknife on Highway 3, Prelude Lake Territorial Park is very popular for camping. The park also features a small, sandy beach, a boat launch and a couple of easy walking trails.

Jak Territorial Park

Set on a hilltop near Inuvik and boasting a great view of the surrounding area, Jak Territorial Park features a small lake for canoeing, interpretive displays, walking trails, a children's playground and a fully serviced campground. Jak means berries in the Gwich'in language and the park is full of them during the camping season.

Heritage Park

Comprising an area of 35,000 square feet, Heritage Park protects the land that is thought to be the site of original Fort of the Forks, the original trading post in 1803. The bluff is enclosed by the Liard and Mackenzie rivers. Two of Fort Simpson's most historical buildings are located here: George McPherson's log house (1935), which will be used for cultural activities, and the Sacred Heart Rectory (1911), which will be used as a museum, art studio and tea house.

Papal Grounds

This area, also known as 'The Flat', was important to the First Nations people as a gathering place. More recently in 1987, Roman Catholic Pope John Paul II celebrated mass here during his visit to Canada. A drum circle and tepee mark the location.

Queen Elizabeth Territorial Park is a popular destination for picnicking and hiking, with trails throughout the park and to the Slave River. It is located at the eastern end of the Wood Buffalo Route, and also features a campground with showers.

Tuktut Nogait National Park

In the isolated north-east corner of the province's mainland, 40 km east of the community of Paulatuk, Tuktut Nogait National Park protects over 16,000 sq km of tundra landscape, pristine rivers, deep canyons and fascinating wildlife such as grizzly bears, caribou, wolves and muskoxen. There are no facilities in this wilderness park, visitors must be entirely self-sufficient. The park is accessible via boat from Paulatuk, or air charters from Inuvik and Norman Wells.

Sambaa Deh Falls Territorial Park

On the renowned Waterfalls Route, 150 km east of Fort Simpson, Sambaa Deh Territorial Park features two impressive waterfalls: Sambaa Deh Falls and Coral Falls. The river (Sambaa Deh/Trout River) was once a trade route for fur trappers. Fishing is excellent downstream, with Arctic greyling, northern pike, pickerel and lake trout. A well-serviced campground is located on site.

Nitainlaii Territorial Park

Situated on the Dempster Highway, 9 km south of Fort McPherson, Nitainlaii Territorial Park offers basic camping facilities on a cliff overlooking the Peel River. Surrounded by trees, the camping area features toilets, drinking water, a kitchen shelter and firewood. In addition to hiking trails, the park features a visitor information centre with displays about the local Gwich'in Dene culture.

Wood Buffalo National Park

Established in 1922, Wood Buffalo National Park is North America's largest national park and protects the world's largest free roaming herd of wood bison. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the park also protects the last natural nesting ground of the whooping crane, extensive salt plains, and a great expanse of a boreal ecosystem. The park headquarters are located in Fort Smith.

Nahanni National Park Reserve

One of the finest national parks anywhere, Nahanni was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. This incredible unspoiled wilderness has forest, wild rivers, alpine tundra, mountain peaks and canyons. There is hiking and rafting and kayaking available. Accommodation is limited and access is only by aircraft.

Twin Falls Territorial Park

Located 50 km (31 mi) south of the town of Hay River, Twin Falls Territorial Park is home to the impressive Alexandra and Louise Falls. The park includes a number of special features including a pathway from the Hay River Canyon to the falls, an interpretive trail, display panels discussing the importance of the falls to the First Nations people of the region and a campsite.

Ivvavik National Park

Ivvavik National Park is located approximately 200 km east of Inuvik. There is evidence that human habitation can be dated back 30 000 years. The remains of eight distinct cultures have been discovered by archaeologists. The Firth River is rated as difficult by canoers and kayakers.

Hay River Territorial Park

Located on Vale Island on the shore of Great Slave Lake, Hay River Territorial Park features a playground, BBQ pits, volleyball nets and a concession stand in the summer. Open from May 15 to September 15, the park includes a campground and a nautically themed reception building. The park and its trails are accessible by foot during the off-season but no services are offered.

Aulavik National Park

Aulavik National Park is located on Banks Island, in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Covering more than 12,000 sq km, the park's rugged arctic lowlands landscape features polar deserts, river valleys, badlands and coastline. Home to one of North America's most northerly navigable rivers (Thomsen River), as well as the world's largest population of muskoxen and the endangered Peary caribou, the park attracts paddlers, back-country hikers and wildlife viewers. The park may be accessed by charter plane from Inuvik.

Located approximately 40 km south of Inuvik on the Dempster Highway, the Gwich'in Territorial Park Reserve features scenic limestone cliffs, Campbell Lake, rare arctic plants, a fall migratory bird staging area and a unique reversing delta in the spring. The Vadzaih van Tshik Territorial Campground offers 12 campsites with limited facilities on Caribou Creek.

Herschel Island Territorial Park

Herschel Island is located in the Beaufort Sea, off the Yukon's north coast. Several species of birds and wildlife frequent the area once inhabited by prehistoric hunters and fishers. Enjoy hiking, camping, photography and wildlife viewing. Visitors to the park are advised to carry all necessary equipment, clothing and supplies as there are limited services.
